Research Projects

Bio-Waves, Inc. is engaged in a variety of research, survey, monitoring, and mitigation projects.
Listed below are several examples of research projects we have conducted. Please check back often for updates.

Pacific Islands Minke Whale Research
We are in the final phase of a 2.5 year research project focusing on the acoustic ecology and behavior of minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in the Hawaiian and surrounding Islands of the Tropical Pacific. Our goals are to develop and use passive acoustic methods to survey and monitor acoustic behaviors of minke whales so that we can better understand their biology. Continue >>>

Pacific Orcinus Distribution Surveys (PODS)
These vessel-based surveys of killer whales are conducted each spring in the 'outer coastal' waters of the Northwest Pacific (i.e. Washington, Oregon and Northern California) headed by Dr. Brad Hanson from NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle. Since the project's inception in 2003, Bio-waves has developed and operated the passive acoustic monitoring system to detect and track killer whales. The survey next sets sail in spring 2011. Marianas Island Sea Turtle and Cetacean Surveys (MISTCS)
This large-scale, line-transect survey of deep oceanic waters around the Marianas Islands was conducted in 2007 for the U.S. Navy. Bio-waves was responsible for all aspects of the passive acoustic operations of this survey, including monitoring of towed hydrophone arrays and deployment of sonobuoys to detect marine mammals. Surveys of Arctic Marine Mammals in the Chukchi Sea
In the summer and fall of 2006, Bio-Waves Inc. conducted passive acoustic surveys of marine mammals in the Chukchi Sea. Our involvement included provision of a towed hydrophone array system as well as monitoring and operation efforts by Bio-Waves field personnel. This collaborative research project was part of the 'Joint Monitoring Program', the result of an agreement between a consortium of oil production and exploration companies, and the National Marine Fisheries Service, to monitor the effects of these activities on marine mammals.
